I am Maia Lowen, a third year architecture student also pursuing a minor in business at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I am driven by an interest in how thoughtful design, strategy, and context shape the built environment. My academic work focuses on translating conceptual ideas into clear architectural systems through research, drawing, and model making.

Through studio projects, I have developed crucial experience in design development, spatial organization, and architectural representation. Through this I have also become proficient in the programs Rhino, Revit, Adobe Creative Suites, and many others. My background in business complements my architectural education by strengthening my understanding of project feasibility, communication, and the broader forces that influence design decisions.

experience

My architecture experience outside of school has been architectural intern experience at Lowen+Associates, LLC, S. Mitchell Hodge, AIA, and EOA Architects. At EOA Architects, I was able to get the opportunity to intern in high school. I accompanied the owners in client meetings to observe and learn about the design process and worked with the owners by adding input on their current projects. This internship was very valuable to experience before going into architecture school so that I could gain basic tools and experience. In high school, I also had the opportunity to intern with S. Mitchell Hodge, AIA. During this internship, I attended meetings to observe and learn the design process with clients and I accompanied the owner on site visits to monitor construction progress and ensure compliance with design specifications. This internship was very valuable as well because I learned about structure and reading drawings before starting architecture school.

Over multiple years, I have worked for Lowen+Associates, LLC during high school and college breaks. I have supported a wide range of project phases, contributing to architectural presentations, design documentation, and client-facing materials. I have actively participated in client meetings, offering design input while gaining valuable exposure to real world project workflows and professional communication. My experience at Lowen + Associates has helped me to develop a strong understanding of collaborative design processes and client centered project delivery.

During my time with the firm, I also conducted site visits both independently and alongside the owner, documenting existing conditions and monitoring project development for use in design and construction coordination. I have even had meetings independently with the project manager on the firm’s project, the Manning. Throughout these intern experiences, I have developed proficiency in the software’s Revit, SketchUp, Rhino, and Adobe Creative Suite. This has strengthened my ability to translate conceptual ideas into technical and visual deliverables. This hands on experience has prepared me to contribute meaningfully to professional design teams and continue growing as an emerging architectural professional.

In my free time, I consistently practice my photography and art. I have a deep passion and I believe they intrinsically are linked to architecture.
